Cloud storage keeps files online. A cloud ebook library adds book-aware organization and, depending on the service, reading and annotations. Confirm all three before treating a drive folder as your reading system.
Separate access from continuity
Downloading an EPUB to two devices gives you two readable copies. It does not make the apps agree about your chapter. Choose a reading system with a shared position service if continuity is the reason you are moving online.
Plan for the offline half
A network connection is not a reading requirement you want on a train. Download the titles you need before leaving, open each once, and check what happens to new notes when the device reconnects.
Keep the exit simple
Retain original files outside the service. Export your catalog and annotations periodically. An export is only useful after you have opened it somewhere else and checked that titles, editions, and locations still mean something.
The details, at a glance.
| Consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Storage | Can files be uploaded, retrieved, and backed up? |
| Library | Are author, series, and source searchable? |
| Reading | Does the reader handle your real EPUBs and PDFs? |
| Continuity | What exactly returns after an offline session? |
A few things worth asking.
Is cloud storage a backup?
It can be one copy, but a synchronized deletion may spread. Keep an additional versioned or offline backup.
Can I use my existing Calibre library?
You can export a pilot collection. The way metadata and custom fields transfer depends on the destination.
