Open the book record, compare edition and content details, attach true format variants to that edition, and select the format used most often as primary. Keep translations, revisions, abridgements, and materially different editions separate.
Decide whether the content matches
An EPUB and PDF from the same publisher and edition can be useful variants. A translation, revised technical edition, or abridged audiobook is not merely another container and should retain its own identity.
Choose the primary file by workflow
EPUB is usually best for reflowable reading and Kobo delivery. PDF protects page layout. M4B or MP3 serves listening. Primary does not mean delete the others; it means the default file for supported actions.
Protect annotations during changes
Positions attach to a specific file structure. Replacing the primary file or reconverting an EPUB can break locators. Export important notes and finish a device sync before changing the active asset.
The details, at a glance.
| Consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Same edition, different container | May belong on one record |
| Translation or revision | Keep as a distinct edition |
| Primary format | Default for reading and delivery |
| Annotations | Export before file replacement |
A few things worth asking.
Is every same-title file a duplicate?
No. Compare author, publisher, edition, language, and content before merging.
Which primary format works with Kobo collections?
Use EPUB as the primary file for the supported Kobo delivery workflow.
