Use Calibre’s documented export workflow for moving its data, and distinguish that backup from a file export for a different reader. The destination may not understand every Calibre field or annotation.
Define the destination first
A new Calibre installation and a different reading service need different handoffs. For a full application move, follow the Calibre export/import documentation. For another reader, determine which files and metadata fields it accepts.
Save a baseline
Record book and format counts and a sample of tags, series, and custom fields. Capture important notes separately where necessary. Keep the source unchanged while you validate the destination.
Verify more than the count
Open several books, including one with non-English metadata, a multi-author title, and a series. Compare covers and chapter navigation. Reconcile missing fields before beginning a large import.
The details, at a glance.
| Consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Full application move | Use the documented Calibre export/import route |
| Different reading app | Export compatible files and supported metadata |
| Annotations | Check separate export support |
| Verification | Compare sample records and open files |
A few things worth asking.
Is copying EPUBs a complete Calibre backup?
No. Files alone do not preserve all application data, settings, or library-specific fields.
Should I delete the old library after upload?
Keep it until counts, reading, metadata, and recovery have been verified.
