First identify whether you are reading a Kobo-account purchase or a sideloaded file. Then check the reader and account on the iPhone or iPad. Different origins can follow different synchronization paths.
Write down the complete route
Record source → Kobo reader → iOS reader. “Kobo to phone” leaves out the software that owns the reading position. Confirm the app and account on both ends before changing files.
Run a two-way test
Open the same edition on both devices. Read a few paragraphs on the Kobo, sync, and check the phone. Add one note on the phone and check the Kobo. A position match does not prove notes travel too.
Keep a fallback locator
Before changing apps, save a chapter name and a short phrase near your place. It is a simple recovery aid if different editions, app settings, or a failed sync point to the wrong location.
The details, at a glance.
| Consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Kobo-account title | Start with Kobo’s documented account-sync route |
| Sideloaded EPUB | Verify a separate compatible workflow |
| Position | Test chapter and passage, not only percentage |
| Notes | Test direction and edit behavior independently |
A few things worth asking.
Can I assume a sideloaded file behaves like a store purchase?
No. Test its supported route explicitly.
Does iPad screen size change the page number?
Reflowable text repaginates. Compare the actual passage rather than a displayed page number.
