Use series for reading order, collections for meaningful groups, and metadata for finding books. Keep the master copy of each file outside the device so cleanup does not put your only copy at risk.
Decide what belongs on the device
Your full archive and your traveling bookshelf do not have to be identical. Keep a focused selection of current reads, reference titles, and next-in-series books on the eReader. Preserve the larger archive in your library.
Separate series from collections
A series describes an ordered relationship between books. A collection describes why you grouped them. “Earthsea” and “Next holiday” answer different questions; using one field for both makes later sorting harder.
Fix metadata before repeating a transfer
Check author spelling, book title, and series order in the source library. Keep a record of your transfer method. Replacing a file already being read can affect its relationship to existing annotations, so test a copy first.
The details, at a glance.
| Consider | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Author | One consistent spelling and sort convention |
| Series | Name plus a separate numeric order |
| Collection | A useful reading context |
| Device shelf | A manageable subset of the archive |
A few things worth asking.
Do I need every book on my Kobo?
No. A curated device shelf can be easier to browse while the full collection stays backed up.
Should I put series numbers in titles?
Prefer separate series fields when your workflow supports them. Preserve the original title for searching and exports.
